Purpose, and Accomplishments of Rhonda’s House Peer-run Crisis Respite Center

On September 22, 2018, Life Connections opened the doors to Rhonda’s House, the first and only peer-run respite center operating in Iowa. Rhonda’s House was originally located in a three-bedroom house on the grounds of the Genesis Medical Center in Dewitt. Rhonda’s House provides a home-like environment for individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis and who voluntarily choose temporary respite services to restore their wellbeing instead of treatment in a locked psychiatric unit. Rhonda’s House is open and operates seven days per week, 24 hours per day, serving individuals living throughout the five-county catchment region of Eastern Iowa. At Rhonda’s House, well trained Peer Recovery Specialists deliver evidence-based peer support and recovery services. In three years of operation, Rhonda’s House has served more than 150 people from across Eastern Iowa and helped those individuals gain and sustain health and wellness after experiencing serious crises and life disruptions.

About Rhonda’s House

Life Connections Peer Recovery Services (Life Connections) is a peer-run nonprofit organization based in Dewitt, IA that provides peer-delivered wellness and recovery services to individuals struggling with emotional distress, mental health challenges, substance use challenges, and other life-interrupting challenges. The mission of Life Connections is to create peer-to-peer opportunities for advancing hope, recovery, and wellness for all people in Iowa. The organization was incorporated on February 19, 2016 and received its federal tax-exempt status determination from the IRS on June 12, 2017. Life Connections has been recognized by Doors to Wellbeing, a federally funded National Consumer Technical Assistance Center, as “a model peer-run organization operating in a rural community.”

Why a capital campaign?

Since opening in October of 2018, Rhonda’s House has operated in a house leased by Life Connections from Genesis Medical Center (GMC) for an annual fee of one dollar. The generous subsidy from GMC helped Life Connections to establish the Rhonda’s House service and prove the efficacy of peer-run crisis respite. From the beginning, GMC was clear that leasing their facility was not a long-term option due to plans for campus improvement and targeted new construction on the property where Rhonda’s House was originally located.

In May, 2022 Life Connections opened the doors to a new home located at 910 11th St. in DeWitt that was purchased by the organization. DeWitt Bank and Trust has graciously provided a six month mortgage with an interest rate of 5?% so operations can continue. At this time we are working to raise the $150,000 necessary to pay off the mortgage and complete necessary renovations to the property including installation of a large wheelchair ramp to make the property accessible to those with special needs and construction of a fifth bedroom.
